Many of us have suffered, or know people who have suffered trauma at an early stage by not getting our needs met and have experienced trauma that has affected our developmental ability to attach securely. We now know that this can go onto create difficulties in creating peer relationships and the ability to focus and concentrate as well as being happy in life, and fulfilling our potential.
Neuroscience is now demonstrating that the limbic system, which is at the seat of our attachment, is also key to addressing these difficulties. We now know that healing the limbic system provides the starting foundation by which we can address this trauma.
During our initial stages of development, whilst the brain is still forming and our attachment style is being created, culture, language, climate, nutrition and parents shape each of our brains in a very unique way. Given good times and with parents who have an awareness of how to encourage and nurture the young child, this early brain building will serve the child well throughout life, however when factors are not so favourable the brain that is sculpted in ways that have assisted the child in surviving childhood, may become maladaptive later in life. It is in these circumstances that the therapist helps to restructure the neural architecture to support the service of more adaptive behaviour, cognition and emotion. Building the human brain is vastly complex; rebuilding it is a difficult and fascinating challenge.
